The Story

Tell us how it all started. Why? What’s the story?

I worked in the marketing and advertising industry since college, but always wanted my own thing. As a marketing rep for a local career training school, I had the opportunity to manage several of their social media platforms and realized early on the power of reaching people socially. With some serious encouragement from family and friends, I launched Social Butterfly in May of 2013. I had four clients, a business license and my laptop. Word spread fast and I knew six months in, I had to hire someone. Three years later my team of six manages over 30 accounts statewide with the recent addition of email marketing and video production services.

My Mom actually came up with the name of business. We were brainstorming some ideas one afternoon and she said, “You know, you’ve always been a social butterfly…”. A friend designed the logo and just like that, my little business idea had wings.

Biggest Success

What is your biggest success so far?

My biggest success so far has been finding and retaining an amazing staff. The SB team is fierce and each member has a unique skill set. I try to never micromanage and give my team complete freedom. We all work virtually and meet once a month for a “business” lunch and drinks.

Biggest Challenge

What is the biggest challenge in your industry? What are you doing to deal with that?

The biggest challenge in the social media industry is so many business owners think they can do it on their own or tell me their son/daughter just graduated from high school and they can manage it. There a huge difference between posting selfies on Instagram and managing a company’s entire brand socially. Educating the client on how to create a strategy and content calendar have helped them realize how much goes into daily management.


What advice would you give to a business owner starting out in your industry that you wish you would have known going in?

Take the time to set up processes and clear expectations from the beginning. I took an online productivity class last year and it has helped streamline so many aspects of running my business that I wish I had know when I started. Simple organization, time management, delegating and knowing when to say no are huge lessons I’ve learned.

Surprise Tidbit

What don’t most people realize about you or your company?

Most people don’t realize how many local charitable organizations we provide social media services to free of charge. It’s a big part of our company culture to give back however we can. A few of our favorite events we support/sponsor socially are the Delaware Burger Battle, benefiting The Ministry of Caring; Barkitecture, an annual event supporting Faithful Friends Animal Society; MSquerade benefiting the MS Society of the Greater Delaware Valley; Great Dames Inc and The Delaware Economic Summit.

I’m also very proud of an event series that I co-founded with fellow bossbabe Amber Shader called Mascara & Mimosas. A business brunch for like-minded female entrepreneurs and leaders, our mission is to build a girl army of women in Delaware who empower and inspire each other. We believe in collaboration and celebration vs. competition and comparison. We want to celebrate being women leaders and business owners vs. molding ourselves to fit into the “boys club” culture.
