Tell us how it all started. Why? What’s the story?
Style Savvy with Kim was born in 2011 when I entered a contest that the Oprah Winfrey Show and Kohl’s Department store was sponsoring. The idea was…pitch your idea for a new show on the OWN network that focused on fashion, interior design, health or food. My show idea involved taking regular people on regular budgets and showing them how to shop the savvy way by never paying full price to look fabulous! I could work with people who needed a new look or wardrobe but had to stretch their budget.
What is your biggest success so far?
During the past few years I have had the opportunity of working with wonderful clients and was the lead stylist for the Goodwill Second-Hand Chic Fashion show in 2012. That lead me to receive Goodwill’s Volunteer of the Year award in 2012. Amazing! Most recently, I was nominated and won the 2013 Delaware Today’s Fashion Awards for Best Dressed Delaware Woman.
What is the biggest challenge in your industry? What are you doing to deal with that?
The biggest challenge in my industry is that I am not selling an item, but a service. People need items, they want services. In this economic climate, many people are pinching pennies and fashion tends to be last on the priority list. My goal to overcome this is to continually educate people that hiring me is an investment and my time is well worth it when they can learn how to create outfits from their own closet and how to buy pieces to incorporate on a savvy budget.
What advice would you give to a business owner starting out in your industry that you wish you would have known going in?
The advice that I would give to someone in the industry is keep putting your name out there. Do this by networking with other people that can connect you with possible clients. Your reputation is everything and you want others to view you as a professional at all times. Smile, be grateful, and view every opportunity as a stepping stone to your goal!
What don’t most people realize about you or your company?
Most people don’t realize that this is my second job. I am a trained educator and work at a college during the day teaching students who aspire to become teachers. No matter what you do, always look professional and classy! Like me on Facebook here.
