Tell us how it all started. Why? What’s the story?
December 2015: I had just graduated college [Marymount University] with a web design – social media marketing degree & was searching all over for a job. I not only had a passion for web design and social media, but all through college I was a freelance writer for multiple online bloggers. So when job searching nothing was interesting me or the ones I was interested in weren’t calling me back. Typical post grad life.
My boyfriend who at the time was working for a local NBC station as their creative services director came to me with the idea of us starting our own freelance media company with his friend from work. He wanted to branch out with his career & knew I was in the process of looking for a job. It couldn’t have been more perfect timing. I loved the idea and didn’t have a second thought about it. I can honestly say, after over a year in business – it was the best decision I have ever made! I get to pursue all 3 passions of mine + be my own boss!
What is your biggest success so far?
My biggest success first is being 23 and co owning my own business. I still sit back and think, is this really real? IT IS!
As for my company, I’d have to say our biggest success to date is producing 2 TV show segments [Coastal Cuisine & AE Report] every week.
What is the biggest challenge in your industry? What are you doing to deal with that?
As a web designer and social media marketer the biggest challenge is how fast these industry’s are evolving. Everyday there is something new to learn so it is important to constantly be studying and increasing your skill set.
It can also be hard at times to not compare yourself and keep your creativity throughout this industry evolution process.
But the challenges are what make working in this industry so rewarding!
What advice would you give to a business owner starting out in your industry that you wish you would have known going in?
The advice I would give is to ask yourself if you are ready to run company, or if you just want a job. Owning your own company is way more intense than having a 9-5 job. You can’t just leave work and forget the job until the next day. No one is coming in to take your shift. And no one is coming in to pick up the slack. It is all on you.
Networking, relationships, a positive attitude, and the best work you can produce will help your business grow and be successful.
